Why it was built
Oasis of the Seas established a new scale for Royal Caribbean cruising. The Turku yard delivered it in October 2009. Instead of relying solely on traditional enclosed public rooms, the design incorporated a planted Central Park, a shopping promenade and a wide range of attractions within a very large passenger vessel.
The shipyard behind the scale
The ship was built in Turku, whose current owner Meyer Turku includes it in the yard’s historical portfolio. The company name at construction was STX Europe. Keeping place and company name distinct helps explain the continuity of shipbuilding expertise even when a yard changes ownership.
Power and capacity
The builder lists 60 MW of propulsion power and 97,020 kW of total engine power. Those are different quantities: propulsion is only part of the ship’s energy demand. Accommodation and public facilities also need power. Passenger figures on the same page include a normal-occupancy value, so they should not be substituted for a maximum-passenger figure without explanation.
