BEHIND THE PARTICULARS

Built for a purpose

Builder / location
Chantiers de l’Atlantique, Saint-Nazaire, France
Original role
Oasis-class cruising with eight neighbourhoods

Why it was built

Wonder of the Seas developed the Oasis-family idea of breaking a very large ship into recognisable neighbourhoods. An eighth neighbourhood was part of its launch proposition. The design creates distinct places to spend time instead of asking passengers to experience the vessel as one continuous hotel corridor.

Construction and entry into service

Chantiers de l’Atlantique handed over the ship in January 2022 after construction at Saint-Nazaire. Delivery transfers the completed vessel to the operator, but the first passenger voyage is a separate event. The builder’s announcement set out a March debut from Fort Lauderdale followed by a European summer.

Where it was intended to travel

The 2022 programme included Caribbean voyages and Mediterranean departures from Barcelona and Rome’s port, Civitavecchia. These dated plans explain why the ship combines sea-day attractions with access to major tourist ports. They do not establish a current itinerary. Its ranking also depends on the measurement: public decks add volume without making it the world’s longest vessel.

Sources & measurement notes

Length measures the vessel from end to end. Gross tonnage measures enclosed volume, not weight. Historical GRT is excluded from the GT ranking. Published figures can differ by configuration and measurement precision.
